back in the house

We moved back in the house about two weeks ago.  Things are going slowly but surely.  I have a retaining wall, sidewalk, and steps to build, a whole yard to landscape, and a basement to insulate and finish. Ellie started Kindergarden, and LUcy is in her last year at middle school.  I am seriously in need of coffee, so this will be short!  Thank you everyone who has helped me so far, Chris, Jen, Mom and Dad, Luke, Jimmy, Neal, Ari (and the two girls she brought with), and anyone else I might have forgotten.  I really appreciate it!

house move 2

Well, things have changed a lot in our house.  It’s now sitting on blocks in the back yard like some old farm car.  Hopefully we can get it replanted soon.  Finished the excavation today.  We start setting concrete forms tomorrow.  I have lots to say, but little time to do it so will just sign off and say it’s going well, but at a much slower pace than I’d hoped.

We are about to start the biggest project ever for our house, a new basement.  We had termite problems last fall, and they ate out one of our sill plates.  To fix that, you have to lift the house.  So, as long as the house is being lifted we are going to put a new foundation under it, enlarge hte basement to go under our porch, and put heated floors in.  We started gutting it this weekend, wow does it look different.  It will be something to see when they drive our house into the back yard to pour the cement.  Stay tuned…

Ok, let me do a quick summary of Sadie and LUcy’s Birthday pics.  I built a new set of bunkbeds for the girls.  Gary came down to see us for Sadies birthday, and then my MOm came the Next weekend.  We went to the Shrine circus, a good time was had by all, but very disappointed that there was no motorcycle cage of death.  Went to the scince center, and the zoo sometime in there.  Then, Lucys birthday.  She wanted to go camping, so we took two of her friends with and went rock climbing.  She had a Converse birthday cake.

This is from Calli.
Yesterday morning, brushing her teeth, Ellie mentions, "Mom, I swallowed a bobby pin."  I’m thinking, why would she have a bobby pin?  Could she really have swallowed a bobby pin? Ah yes, the morning before, she asked for a barrette for her hair, I forgot to do it, at school she looks up at me with disappointment draining her little face and reminds me that I forgot. Feeling smart for my quick thinking mom skills, I pulled a few pins from my overdone hairdo and fixed her up right pretty.  At naptime, she took the pins out.  Sucked on one and it went straight down.  She didn’t tell her teacher because "Teacher wasn’t looking at me."

I couldn’t be prouder of her for telling me about it the next day! Jon took the day off and got her xrayed, then took her to the hospital to get a scope down her throat followed by the tweezers to pull the pin out of her stomach.  She was fully anesthetized, recovered easily, and by the time I got home you’d never have thought she’s spent all day at the hospital getting bobby pins pulled from her guts.

So I get home from work – Jon throws down the xray (yup, that’s a bobby pin!). Then the scope picture of Ellie’s stomach and small intestine (gross but pretty cool).  FInally the well travelled bobby pin (put that somewhere safe!).

And a baggy containing a little foam cross, just like those they use at Ellie’s sunday school class for crafts (!!!!do I want to know?!!). Before they xray, the doctor checked Ellie out and found that beauty in her ear.  No, I dont’ know how long that had been there. And here I thought she’d been ignoring me when I told her to clean her room!  Probably didn’t hear a word I said!

All better now, no harm done, so I can share this as a heck of a joy of parenting story.  Cheers!

All I can say is that I never want to see a child of mine in a surgical gown wheeled away on a hospital cart.  Ellie was up and eating popsicles and hour later and seems to have forgotten about it at this point.  She is very attached to her new dragon she got after being so good when they painfully pulled the foam cross out of her ear with a foreceps.

What can I say?  A great night.  I got to party with my brothers and some of my best friends, and ran into some old friends I haven’t seen in years.  Just a great concert and the old friends and my brothers topped it off.  Kyle was nice enough to drive us home so we didn’t have to worry about anything after the concert.  I did manage to twist my ankle at the concert.  It looks worse now than in the photos I took  couple days later.  Hope it heals in time for skiing in feb.  Anyway, for those about to rock…….

We had a great christmas.  This is the first christmas we have ever been home in Sioux Falls and not traveling.  Well, most of our family.  Lucy was supposed to fly out dec. 20th to Portland, but the weather kept her here until the 22nd.  She’ll be back with us dec. 30th.  Not having Lucy for Christmas sucks, but having to stay in Sioux Falls and see her off and pick her up means that we need to be in Sioux Falls for the week.  That meant no travel for the Dewitz clan this year.  This is the first year we’ve ever had a real tree or been in our own house on Christmas day.  It was very nice to relax.  We woke up to a little girl crawling into bed with us, and then the excitement of opening presents.  Sadie got a new baby she hasn’t put down since she opened it.  Ellie has been a hoot.  We went sledding yesterday afternoon, and she decided she wanted a fire.  We built one last night, and then she decided she wanted to shoot off fireworks.  Well, just so happens I had some stashed away for this very occasion.  Very cool seeing those bright colors in the snow.

I also wanted to thank everyone who sent us christmas cards.  THANK YOU!  We really, really appreciate it.  One of these years I hope we get our act enough together to get it done.  Maybe we’ll send out New Years cards.
We headed to ND in january for a weekend after Lucy got back to us.  It was great to see everyone, but had crappy roads there and back.  Ellie and I got to do some sledding, and so did Scot and Neal and I, although it was midnight rather than the afternoon.  It was really cool to have all of us together even for the weekend.  Santa managed to find us again this year, evn in ND and  week late.
